Solder wire used for hand soldering typically contains a central rosin flux core which is released on heating. Fluxes are typically based on rosin, a naturally occurring solid, resinous material obtained from pine trees. Flux cleans the surfaces to be joined, increases the flow of solder to make a good connection and prevents oxidation which could affect the strength and quality of the joint. Much of the problem is actually caused by the flux that solder needs to operate effectively. Pace Ventur-Evac Venturi Solder Fume Extractor Filter 8983-0270. It was widely believed that the move to lead-free soldering would create more environmentally-friendly conditions however because of the higher temperatures required and extra flux used lead-free soldering smoke emissions actually contain more fine dust particles which are easier to breathe in. Soldering and rework, like other activities involving adhesives, welding and laser applications, create particles and gases which can be harmful to workers. Why soldering fumes are a risk to workers In this article we look at the nature of the risk, the relevant legislation, and how fume extraction can be managed safely, effectively, energy-efficiently and in compliance with regulatory demands. Even in regions without such legislation employers have an ethical duty to provide such protection. ![]() Most countries recognise this and enforce legislation to ensure that employers protect their employees from these harmful effects. Employers may face expensive compensation claims as a result. Further hand soldering and desoldering is frequently used in rework stations to carry out repairs and upgrades.Īll of this soldering activity generates fumes which can cause long term, serious harm to operators if inhaled. A small part of the operation is automated, using wave soldering machines, with the majority being manual as operators add individual components using hand soldering irons. Essential considerations for managing soldering fume extractionĮlectronics production is heavily concerned with soldering components on to printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Tidal claims to pay the highest percentage of royalties to music artists and songwriters within the music streaming market. It offers two levels of service: Tidal HiFi (up to CD quality – FLAC-based 16-bit/44.1 kHz) and Tidal HiFi Plus (up to MQA – 24-bit/352.8 kHz). With distribution agreements with all three major record labels and many independent labels, Tidal claims to provide access to more than 80 million tracks and 350,000 music videos. Tidal is now majority-owned by Block, Inc., an American payment processing company that is owned by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey. Get 90 days of TIDAL streaming starting at just $1 right now. Note: the price will go back up to $9.99 and $19.99 respectively after the promotional period ends. Regular TIDAL pricing is up to $19.99 for a HiFi Plus subscription and $9.99 for a HiFi subscription, so you’re saving up to $57 thanks to this TIDAL promotion. ![]() New subscribers can get three months of Tidal’s HiFi streaming service for $1 or three months of its newly-updated HiFi Plus plan for $2. The TIDAL streaming deal runs through January 31, 2022. If you haven’t considered TIDAL in the past, consider their new $1 deal an easy entree into the family. As a music fan, subscribing to TIDAL just feels better, knowing that it’s a service our favorite bands and singers want to be part of as well. The new artist-focused initiatives promise fairer earning terms and quicker payments - something musicians have long been asking for from other streaming services. TIDAL has long been heralded for its library of songs and artists, but it’s become a leader in recent months for advocating for artists as well. the typical industry-accepted method of aggregating streams and allocating it to the most popular artists. Artists will be paid out based on the actual streaming activity of fans vs. TIDAL’s “fan-centered royalties” program, meantime, rolls out in January and pays artists based on how often their music is streamed. This direct-to-artist payment is in addition to the streaming royalties they would also receive and gives musicians an additional payment stream. Need more reason to jump on this TIDAL deal? The company says it will now allow subscribers to give up to 10% of their monthly subscription fee to the artists they listen to most (rather than say, TIDAL automatically giving the money to the most-streamed artists online). This is the first time that a music streaming service enables direct payouts to artists at this scale (see more below). Most important though, TIDAL is the first platform to introduce a Direct Artist Payout program. ![]() In addition to music, TIDAL also has a library of more than 350,000 videos, ranging from music videos to exclusive livestreams (think everything from a Meek Mill listening party to a Kanye West Yeezy fashion show). TIDAL is the only streaming platform offering all three advanced technologies: Master Quality Authenticated audio, Dolby Atmos, and Sony 360. TIDAL also offers the most immersive sound formats when it comes to music streaming. TIDAL’s audio quality helps it stand out against other music streaming services, so if you want the best-sounding music online, you’ll want to subscribe to TIDAL (While Spotify announced its own HiFi tier earlier this year, it has yet to launch as of press time). They also have unique playlists, like “ Metal Christmas” and “ Holiday Rock.“ What Makes TIDAL Better Than Other Services? TIDAL has thousands of artists in total, spanning everything from indie rock to Latin to alternative fare. ![]() ![]() My husband’s rollers and stretch bands and things are always all over the floor of our bedroom and it drives me nuts! So now I’ve built a whole room just for Peloton riding as well as for stretching and meditation, which my me and my husband both do upstairs in our bedroom on the floor at the moment anyway. Here’s the new plan for the main level of the house:īut I’ve also created a second version as I realised that now I can’t get my gym in the basement where I wanted it I have no space to house my Peloton - crisis!!! ✅ changes to outdoor area including a built in curved seating area which I think will look really good plus be very functional when the family comes over (which can be more than 12 people if everyone comes at once!) ✅ outdoor shower added - this is the curved white wall near the pool equipment and washing line ✅ much better sized laundry as I no longer have to squeeze a guest toilet in this room as I’ve got that new bathroom across the hall now, which gives us a larger laundry (which is definitely needed in a house of this size!) study, nanny area, kids bedrooms, library/sitting room - all sorts of purposes This is better for resale eventually as these could be marketed as single bedrooms if need be - or just flexible spaces - e.g. ✅ better study arrangements for my me and my husband - these are now closer together and separated by a bathroom in the middle (which can also be used as a guest toilet). The lounge is also now oriented better to door and will feel much more open and spacious this way - plus easier to bring Hugo in to the room in his wheelchair to sit with the family. I’ve also decided to remove some of the existing fireplace joinery and update the existing wood fire with a gas insert as we are much more likely to use it this way (we love a wood fire but not the cleaning, soot and smoke smell all over the furniture!). coming off it, which made it an unfriendly place to hang out. ✅ changes to the formal living room - This will now become a dedicated space - in other versions it’s had so many rooms and stairs etc. Also gives me a place to have a small walk in style pantry under the stairs with the new kitchen location. This will be a bit costly to fix up but it makes the formal living room a much better space - at the moment it feels like a bit of a walk through room and it’s hard to place furniture as well. ✅ stairs to upstairs master bedroom now open to hallway instead of into the formal living room. I will push window/bench seat out a little for the dining area which gives an extra 500mm or so (definitely needed!) The size is slightly compromised but it’s not too bad. ✅ new living, dining, lounge areas - these now all open up to the garden and I think this flow works better. An additional toilet for the boys won’t be a bad thing anyway as we often have fights over the shared bathroom situation! ✅ instead of internal stairs we will renovate existing separate toilet (over on LH side of plan near boys’ bedrooms). If you want to see the original/existing floor plan and previous version you can check that out here. This has ended up changing quite a bit since the last time I shared it. So that’s what we had arranged the meeting about and I honestly thought it was going to be relatively straight forward as there’s plenty of room down there and to me it looked pretty doable - so was more just a case of what it might cost.Īfter meeting with the underpinner I’ve now come to realise that it’s much more complicated than I first thought and as he said to me “if you go ahead with this it will be the most expensive mudroom in history”….good way to talk yourself out of a job LOL!Īnyway - the ballpark he gave me on the spot was about $100,000-$150,000 just for the basement works but even if we do go ahead with that there isn’t enough room for the gym, due to piers being in the way - so that would just be for a (smaller than I wanted) mudroom and stairs.Īnd it means I’m now back to adjusting the floor plan again, which I’ve been doing over the past few days while I’ve been sick with COVID (boo!). In earlier posts about our renovation ( you can read here) you may recall that one of the things we were hoping to do was to dig out some of the area next to our existing garage to create a mudroom, gym and internal stairs in to the house. ![]() We had arranged the meeting to discuss the logistics and potential costs involved in creating our internal access/stairs from our garage into the house. ![]() Earlier this week I met with an underpinner - this is someone who helps with renovating basements and making structural changes under your floor line. ![]() Potato tubers infected with late blight often decay in storage due to secondary invaders.įigure 3. Affected portions can provide an entry point for secondary soft rot organisms that rot the tuber. Early tuber symptoms often do not extend deeply into the tuber flesh, and they usually are more visible when a thin layer of the peel is removed. Affected tubers may have dry, reddish, granular lesions beneath the tuber skin ( Figure 3). The pathogen also can infect potato tubers. Fruits are initially still firm over time, secondary soft rot organisms will likely move in and cause mushy decay. Tomato fruit with diffuse late blight lesion. The delicate thin layer of mold growth of the pathogen often is associated with fruit blemishes.įigure 2. The blemishes can expand to cover the entire fruit and, through time, the fruit will deteriorate from secondary soft rot organisms. Affected fruits usually retain their normal firmness initially. On tomato fruit, initial blemishes and blotches appear somewhat greasy and are diffusely brownish or greenish gray ( Figure 2). This lesion can quickly expand and kill the adjacent leaves. Sometimes, a distinct yellowish or light green margin surrounds the blotch. A late-blight infected potato leaf, as seen from the upper sid of the leaf. Note the thin, dellicate white growth of the pathogen on the underside of the leaf along the perimeter of the lesion. A late-blight lesion on a potato leaflet, as seen from the underside of the leaf. At this point, foliar symptoms can resemble those associated with frost damage.įigure 1A. Stem lesions ( Figure 1C) and leaf blotches will expand to encompass entire leaves, leaving them brown, shriveled and dead. Sometimes, a narrow yellow margin forms around the lesion perimeter ( Figure 1B). Under moist conditions, a thin layer of delicate whitish-gray or translucent moldlike growth will form on the undersides of leaves ( Figure 1A). On leaflets, late blight symptoms begin as small, water-soaked lesions that quickly expand to form large gray, pale green or dark brown blotches on leaves, petioles and stems ( Figure 1). The combination of several factors, including susceptible hosts (plants that can become infected with the late blight pathogen), new strains of the pathogen, inoculum buildup from recent epidemics and ideal weather suitable for disease development provide conditions for a “perfect storm” of annual late blight epidemics.Īll above-ground plant parts of tomatoes and potatoes are susceptible to late blight. Wind can carry the pathogen long distances. Temperatures between about 59 and 80 F allow the disease to progress rapidly, but the pathogen is active at a wide range of temperatures. The late blight pathogen requires cool to moderate temperatures and free moisture from dew, rain or overhead sprinklers. Weather conditions that promote late blight development Many gardeners and small producers were unprepared for the recent epidemics and did not recognize the disease until too late. Widespread cool, wet weather during the 20 growing seasons was particularly conducive to disease development, and the disease progressed rapidly. Evidence suggests that the source of some of the new strains was infected tomato seedlings from production facilities in the South that were distributed to big-box retail stores across North America. New strains of the pathogen that are able to infect both potatoes and tomatoes have been identified during the recent epidemics. Several strains of the pathogen occur, and in the past, most strains in the central North American region infected only tomatoes or potatoes. and parts of Canada, devastating tomatoes and potatoes in gardens and commercial settings. In 20, the disease was found at epidemic levels in the north-central U.S. This disease has occurred sporadically in North America for decades. It is the same disease that destroyed potato crops in Ireland, leading to the Irish potato famine in the 1840s. Late blight is caused by Phytophthora infestans, a pathogen in the “water molds” group of organisms. Gardeners and growers alike have a responsibility to do their parts to control it. As a result, late blight is a community problem that affects everyone. The pathogen that causes late blight is windborne and can devastate yields quickly in the garden and commercial fields if left unchecked. This plant menace can show up any time during the growing season on a susceptible plant when the right weather conditions and the pathogen are present. Other related plants such as petunia and hairy nightshade also are affected. Late blight is a potentially devastating plant disease that affects potatoes and tomatoes.
